One of the 4Cs of Diamonds: Carat Weight

Before purchasing a piece of jewelry for an important life event (and beyond), such as an engagement ring or even wedding bands (containing diamonds), start by choosing the gemstone—the diamond. Whether you desire a higher carat diamond (>1ct) or prefer superior color and clarity (D-F, VVS) for your jewelry (rings, earrings, pendants), it is vital to know a few essential aspects so you can offer the most beautiful gift, to others or to yourself.

Diamond Weight (Carat) in Millimeters

Calculating a diamond's carat weight in millimeters involves a detailed knowledge of the gemstone's geometry and dimensions. It is important to remember that a diamond's carat refers to its weight, not its physical dimensions. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams; generally, diamonds are measured in carats and points (where one carat is divided into 100 points).

To calculate a diamond's dimensions in millimeters, we must consider its shape and proportions, as diamonds are often measured based on their diameter—the distance from one edge to the other, passing through the center. For example, for a round diamond with a 1 ct weight and an Excellent cut, the typical diameter is approximately 6.5 mm. However, it is important to note that a diamond's dimensions can vary depending on its cut, proportions, and other characteristics.

Remember that every fraction of a millimeter in diameter is crucial for a diamond's final appearance. A 6.2 mm diamond with a 1 ct weight will actually look much smaller than a 6.5 mm diamond of the same weight. Furthermore, it will look like a diamond weighing only 0.85 ct—making a 6.2 mm diameter less desirable for a 1 ct diamond.

Suppose we have two 1 ct diamonds with different diameters (6.2 mm and 6.5 mm) but of the same quality, as described in their gemological reports. Despite this, the price of the 6.2 mm diamond will be lower than that of the 6.5 mm diamond. Therefore, if you do not know what dimensions a well-cut and polished 1 ct diamond should have, you might believe you have paid a fair and very advantageous price.

In conclusion, a diamond's carat weight is a very important characteristic because the weight in carats must correspond to certain physical proportions for the diamond to be beautiful and desirable. The overall dimensions must be correct for the stone to have the appropriate brilliance and value, and to truly be worth the investment.
